I have ADD/ADHD. Can you help me?

I have a soft spot for those of you (or your children) who have ADD/ADHD. I am constantly learning and am in awe of all this gift brings to creativity and life! Yes, I said “gift” because I believe there are beautiful characteristics that you bring to life that non-ADD people can’t bring. I would love to help you come back to task so that we can work through some tough spots in your home.

Oh dear one! I imagine you have been told in some form throughout the years that you can never be organized, can never focus long enough to get organized - except in those special circumstances when you can hyper-focus - and that maintaining any sorts of systems would be next to impossible. This couldn’t be further from the truth. You have a unique way of seeing things which means you may have a unique way of storing things but that doesn’t mean it can’t be helpful for you. You may benefit greatly from someone guiding you or working next to you. If you are wanting help, you are not too far gone.

But often it is not so much methods that these people need as it is attitudes and companionship - someone to join them in their efforts. They need to start thinking in ways that work well for them, and they need someone to be there now and then to help them get through the onerous task of picking up.

As I have been spending time slowly learning more and more about your “Ferrari engine (a strength) with bicycle brakes (insufficient for dealing with the strength)” as Dr. Ned Hallowell describes ADHD, I have seen more and more that what I do is what you need. There are a lot of books available offering a lot of advice and methods on getting organized. Some people can get what they need from a book. Let’s be honest though, most people need people - not just people with ADHD. But people with ADHD need people even more. Let’s see how we can work together to use your gifting (Ferrari engine) and my guidance (sufficient brakes) to help you enjoy your home again.

P.S. Dr. Ned Hallowell (Edward M. Hallowell, M.D.) also has ADHD which is another reason I love his input and perspective so much.
