What to Ask Before You Start Any Organizing Project

This is a foundational question that needs to be answered before starting any organizing project: Why do I want to get organized?

Let's break it down a little.

"I want"... until you are ready to get organized, don't start. I'm serious. If someone else wants you to get organized, but you don't, you will end up with resentment, burnout, and in the end with a lack of organization potentially worse than when you started. Along these same lines, the “I” means “you” want to get organized and may mean that no one else in your home does. So stick with your stuff to be safe.

"get organized"... organized looks different for different people and that is why it can be helpful to bring in a professional to help you focus on your goals in your household. The process can be daunting and overwhelming because contrary to popular belief, it isn't a fast process. It takes time and commitment. A professional can help you start AND finish with a plan in place to keep it up.

"Why"... it's pretty popular to know your "why" these days. Knowing why you want to get organized is no different. Do you want to be able to have people over without feeling embarrassed? Do you want to be able to find a pair of scissors without having to yell at your family for misplacing them again? Maybe you just want to be able to breathe easy in your home knowing that you are in charge of your stuff instead of your stuff being in charge of you.

So, why do you want to get organized? What's your why?
